| Of Standing O's & Encores |
[Jan. 9th, 2006|12:16 pm] |
Wow...finaly got this fucker Tango up and on it's feet.
Nearly packed houses on Friday/Sat for previews and a Full house on Sunday for opening. A nice standing ovation for opening night and the applause came so loud & long that we had to go back out for an encore bow on both Sat & Sun.
The poles love this show (and the americans do too it seems). I had one gentleman tell me that he had seen this at least 6 times in Europe but that this was his favorite production of it so far. They also thought I was going to be a LOT older when I came out of makeup...which says nice things for my makeup skills & characterization as well I suppose. Everyone loves the dance as well...they start applauding just as we are finishing up and dont stop. Word.
Reader & Time Out reviews should be out this week, Trib & Sun Times next weekend.
Only 3 more weeks till I can shave & get a haircut. Huzzah!
I start rehersals for Skin of Our Teeth tomorrow.
Acting is hard. |

| I only ate the Jam! |
[Dec. 9th, 2005|11:07 am] |
Ah, Tango.
So this week I got my coke-bottle glasses (too small) and my buck teeth (awsome).
Fairly light rehersal schedule this week...only monday & wed, which was nice. We had the photo shoot on Wed....and I froze my ass off in the theater because Ziggy forgot to turn on the heat...and I was in my shorts.
Ages ago when I was working on Renfield, Mr. Pitts told me I was a 'mask' actor. Now normaly I don't go in for all that shit...I dont like dealing with theory or technique...I just get up on the stage and "do". But, working in rehersal with the teeth & the glasses, I find realy helps me with my characterization. I suppose it is the 'british' method of building the outside first and alowing that to influence the internal workings of the character. Ergo...Eugene is taking shape nicely.
And by nicely I mean of course fucking hilarious.
The woman who is playing Euginia (my sister) is an amzingly talented older english/australian woman...so in order to bring some continiuity to our relationship I sit there with her and try and match her cadence and timber so that our voices "match" as they would for a borther/sister pair. See is tickled pink by my awsomeness.
BAM.
I think I finaly figured out that dance transition that was giving me trouble...so with any luck we can move past the "getting the steps down" and start working on form. |

| Frustrated |
[Dec. 2nd, 2005|11:39 am] |
Gah! Early week rehersals for Tango went well...just spent 3 days blocking all 3 acts. I mentioned before how physical this show was going to be. I didn't know what I was talking about aparently. With the exception of 10 minutes in act 1 where I actually get to sit down... I am onstage for the entire time running around like a maniac. In addition to the characterization I have for Eugene...which is 100% interalized/exteralized nervousness and angst. So I am onstage shaking with energy the whole time in addition to the afformentioned running around. Plus I have a fight scene in act 3...and you know I go full out for my fight scenes. Luckily the actor Marcus who I have the fight with, I have worked with before in Terra Nova...where we also had a fight scence.
So lets recap. Quivering with energy for two hours. Check Running around for 2 hours straight. Check 1 Fight scene. Check Several pratfalls and other sundry act of physical comedy. Check.
Whew! Glad thats it.
Shit.
The goddamn dance.
Last nights dance rehersal did not go as well as I expected. The first 2 thirds which we learned last week we now have fairly well nailed as well as footwork goes...but still sloppy on poise, posture & fluidity. The last third, which we learned last night is a BITCH. I got realy frustrated after about 2 hours of non-stop dancing due to an exceedingly complicated 'grapevine' segment which we have to repeat twice. I just cant seem to get the shift in rhythm required to execute those moves. Probably just being to hard on myself...I dont like not being able to do something that I know I am capable of. Then again...I know that as long as I can practice on my own and get in a good 1/2 hour of practice with my partener before every single non-dance rehersal...I should be ok. The big flourish at the end should be awsome with a capital A. Basicly I do the big dip/fall backwards with my body ramrod straight..head thrown back scant inhces from the floor...followed by a long rise back in to promenade position. Gah. This stuff that she is teaching us is what you tend to learn after at least one year in Tango classes. Thank god I am superhuman...or I would not be able to pull this off...which I will.
And for all of those out there who said "But Ron! You will know how to tango..that will be awsome!"
Yes. True.
But I am dancing the womans part.
So should some lass down the road come to me and say "Oh Ron...teach me to Tango!" my response would be "Sure I can teach you...but I cant dance with you afterwords...BECAUSE I DONT KNOW THE MANS PART!"
*sigh*
Muttonchops are coming in nicely. I get my false buck teeth next week so I can start training with them. Photoshoot next Wed. And oh yes...I have to wear cokebottle glasses on stage. Costume: Edwardian Tailcoat with shorts and sock garters. Yes...I will present quite the dashing figue onstage.
I will leave you with my favorite line from the show so far (most of my lines are crazy like this):
"If you will all allow me to put in a word, I should like to call your attention to certain achievements; for instance the right to wear short pants!....ah, the fresh feel of the breeze!" |

Something super secret started in my life today. No details till it's locked in.
Weekly Tango rehersal report to follow soon. |

| Pain |
[Nov. 23rd, 2005|10:22 am] |
Jesus H Christ.
I need to soak in a bathtub of steaming hot Ben-gay for the next week (I wonder if that would get me high?).
3 hours of learning only the first half of the Tango has left me a quivering wreck of a man. Every muscle in my body aches except for my scalp...but I'm sure that will start hurting soon.
I'm picking up the steps a lot quicker than I imagined I would but my partner & I are not even attempting good form yet...just getting it right. My arms are killing me from holding them in that damn position...it reminds me of "Hell Night" from my fraternity innitiation, where we had to hold our arms pretty much the same way, but with an unboiled egg clasped in our hands...for 5 hours non-stop (thats another story for another blog entry).
Regardless.....as long as we can pull it off it is going to look awsome and hilarious at the same time. I found a dance partner outside of rehersal so I can practice on my own time. I am determined that with my return to doing shows again...I need to start bringing 100% to every show I do...no more 'theater as a semi-professional hobby'.This show is going to be exceedingly physicaly chalenging for me...probably even more so than Richard III was.
There may or may not be a picture of last nights rehersal in Windy City at some point soon. Ziggy was there taking pictures and that pissed me off...since I was not in any sort of costume and I was covered in sweat. Huzzah. Boo.
Ziggy is also talking about taking this thing on tour later this year...maybe New York and DC...which would be cool. Also found out that Tango is considered the National Play of Poland...in the same sense that Death of a Salesman is to the US. Interesting.
Also somewhat less interesting....no more shaving for me. The muttonchops start growing now. Also I have to wear false buck teeth in the show. Brandon hates me...and is determined to inflict the misery we suffered in Lives of the Monster Dogs on me again.
Curse you Brandon Bruce.
Curse you. |
